Trying to understand calendars

11/19/2006 3:49 PM EST

I'm really confused about the whole issue of calendars for groups. Hoping someone with a CentricCRM point of view can give me some advice.

We are currently testing CentricCRM 4.1 beta 10. No Exchange server or other company-wide shared calendar yet. Maybe 60%-70% of our users are Outlook people, the rest are using a variety of things on Windows and Macs (no Linux I'm aware of).

We have a serious need to get a group calendar system. There are about a hundred people all together and it seems like half of them are on the road at any given time so scheduling meetings has become a serious challenge.

I've heard about XC Connect, Zimbra and Open Exchange which all appear to be full-featured alternatives to Microsoft Exchange. How would these things interact (would they?) with the CentricCRM calendar? I understand the CentricCRM calendar publishing function is a read only file so does that mean the CentricCRM tasks, assignments, or whatever would be "pulled" into the other system or into individual desktop clients?

Would either of the three I mention above, or any others, work better with CentricCRM?

On another calendar-related note, I have Mozilla Sunbird and Lightning installed on my computer. I use Thunderbird for my e-mail client and was hoping to get my CentricCRM calender into Thunderbird. When I click the link on my CentricCRM home page under the calendar all I get is a warning that it might not work on my computer. What is the URL I should use to get the calendar? Why doesn't it show me the proper URL in the warning dialog?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Robert,

CentricCRM has a fairly rudimentary calendar system that desperately needs an update. Our plan is to either integrate an existing system like Open-Xchange or to build something ourselves. Unortunately at present, CentricCRM does not integrate with any of the other systems.

If I were in need of a good shared calendaring system that worked well with Outlook, I would look carefully at Open-Xchange. It has everything you need, is reasonably priced, and has all the connectors to other clients that you're likely to need. It will also likely someday work with CentricCRM.

We are in a similar position and would like to see calendar integration occur on Centric.
I have a Palm PDA, I'm being pushed onto Exchange, I use the Mozilla suite wherever I can, I want to integrate it all with Centric as the central control. Otherwise I will have 4 calendar sources... yuk

  • Palm uses vcs format
  • Mozilla uses ICS or CalDAV
  • Exchange is proprietary
  • Centric - well this is why the discussion, but from what I can see it uses Ical/ICS (I get some nasty looking errrors when I use it through Lightning though)

We are also in dire need of a company calendaring solution and would prefer not to be locked into Exchange. Is there documentation anywhere on how to use Centric wth Sunbird or iCal?

Norman,

Attached is a brief .pdf of how to sync Centric CRM to iCal:

Just to reiterate what Tom has said a few months back, our calendering system at the moment is very basic. 5.0 will have many improvements on the calendering feature such as recurring events, shared calendars, and further Outlook integration.

I'm not sure I understand. Does this mean this calendar can only be seen on my personal CRM homepage and the users but it can't be linked up to Outlook?

Also, how do I view my activities in the Calendar. In the demo Centric CRM, it shows outstanding activities in the Calendar, but I don't see any of mine populated in the calendar. How do I get this to work?
