Innovation by its very nature is risky, so partnering to reduce risk and leverage resources others may have that complement the innovative venture is a smart move.  But it is also a challenge...

Partnering makes a lot of sense, but it is difficult to do because partners inevitably have their own individual missions and goals, processes and cultures.  So, getting the partnering agreement right in the first place and minimizing the required dependence by either party in the initial stages is one way to get to know each other before commiting huge resources.
